Meet the author
I live in North Wales, near
the shores of the Menai Strait and the mountains of
Snowdonia. Some of the books I write are inspired by
local history, landscape and wildlife. Others are
inspired by travels I have made in Europe, Asia, Africa,
North America and Australia.
I was born in the south of
England, and studied at Durham University. I taught
English in Germany, before being employed by
various publishers in London, including Hodder
(ULP/EUP), Hamlyn and Macdonald Educational. In
the 1980s I became a freelance writer and editor.
Today I write for leading
international publishers such as Kingfisher (Macmillan
Publishers), Dorling Kindersley, Wayland and Walker
Books. Other clients include independent book production
companies (known as ‘packagers’), such as Quarto
Children’s Books and Discovery Books.
Most of the books I write are
the result of creative team work, involving specialist,
academic or educational consultants, editors, designers,
picture researchers, artists and photographers, and
overseas publishers. The books require sound planning
coupled with imaginative visualisation, and text that is
clear but lively, suitable
for the age and abilities of
the readership. As well as writing, my work may extend
into editing, project management, consultancy or
research.
My wife
Linda is able to
offer valuable advice in her role as
a teacher, as can
my daughter Elin Rhiannon
Steele as a secondary school
pupil.
Throughout my life,
technology has been changing the way books are printed
and published. Electronic media
now offer all sorts of exciting new opportunities
too. However the aim of my work remains the
same as ever– to communicate simply and
effectively, to encourage young readers
and to open their eyes to new ideas
and new worlds.
