Social Issues and Current Affairs
How do we make sense of the
news behind the headlines? What kind of world are we
living in? These books present young people with useful
facts and all sorts of ideas about society. The
intention is not to provide easy answers, but to set up
debate and discussion, so that readers can draw their
own conclusions.
Which issues are tackled? We
look at population, systems of government,
economics, the role of law, protest, human rights
and the environment. We examine some of the
moral dilemmas we face in modern life. We travel
to some world’s trouble spots to find out more about war
and conflict resolution.
Most of these titles are
aimed at teenagers, but a few also engage younger
readers on a much simpler level.

Reviews
Citizenship
Evans 2001
"Overcome that sinking feeling at the very
mention of this overused word with a crisp, clear and
unashamedly useful guide to the subject of citizenship.
This is the kind of book which outclasses web
information, taking the reader on journeys of
perspective and opinion they may never have
considered....Fully illustrated, written in a
commendably straightforward style, and peppered with
questions to initiate informed thought, discussion and
action, this book is an ideal resource for both school
and home."
Lindsey Fraser, The
Guardian July 2001
Twentieth Century Lives: Campaigners
Wayland 2009
"..beautifully presented and inspiring in its content.
The collection includes...some [campaigners] who will be
less familar to the pupils and their teachers...a sign
of the world focus of this book. This book is easily
accessible to a KS2 pupil but equally informative to a
KS3 and of value in a citizenship lesson even at KS4."
Nick Hunt, School
Librarian October 2010
